Aydın Acun: A bright future awaits the aromatic plants and spices sector

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aromatic Plants and Spice Producers Association, Aydın Acun, highlights the growing demand and exciting growth of the Aromatic Plants and Spices sector worldwide. He mentions that this sector is experiencing a concrete increase in demand and is predicted to continue growing in the future.

Acun observes that recent trends in the food industry, including gastronomy, lifestyle and societal changes, are focusing on the following key elements: the pleasure and happiness experienced when eating, the infusion of modern touches into traditional flavours, the use of ingredients collected from nature, and the contrast of flavours. These trends align closely with the characteristics of spices, which continue to enhance the palate with their diverse and vibrant flavours.

He notes that there is a growing emphasis on the health benefits associated with healthy eating and living. Spices, which enhance the taste of food without adding excessive calories, fat, salt, or sugar, have become an integral part of the current trend towards healthy, beneficial food. As a result, the spice sector receives less criticism, as its positive effects are constantly being discussed.

While there has been a temporary slowdown in total demand due to the economic situation in Turkey over the past two years, Aydın Acun remains optimistic. He is pleased to see a rise in demand for new products, blends, and condiments, indicating that the slowdown is likely to be short-lived.

Acun believes that to further develop the sector, it is necessary to move away from offering mono products, such as chili flakes, black pepper, cumin and oregano (thyme) and instead focus on developing blended products. This shift will allow for greater variety, innovation, and consumer appeal.

In conclusion, the Aromatic Plants and Spice Producers Association is witnessing an exciting growth in the sector, driven by the surging global demand for flavoursome food. The sector aligns with current food trends, such as the emphasis on pleasure when eating, the fusion of modern and traditional flavours, the use of natural ingredients and the desire for contrasting tastes.

Despite temporary economic challenges, there is a positive outlook for the future, with a growing demand for new products and an opportunity to introduce more blended spice options…
