Ahmet Tiryakioğlu: Our wheat flour exports to Syria have doubled in 10 months

Press release…

Ahmet Tiryakioğlu, Chairman of the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly T(İM) Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Sector Board, announced that classic supply-demand cycles, as well as geopolitical risks and climate conditions, play a role in global food markets.

“Following the Russo-Ukrainian War, which affected approximately one-third of global grain trade due to the contraction of the Black Sea route, we have entered a period in which the strategic importance of regionally important countries like Türkiye in food trade has further increased. Our international initiatives and trade connections have enabled us to quickly seize the opportunities that have arisen in the last few years and achieve significant market gains,” he said.

“On the other hand, as the world’s largest wheat flour exporter for over a decade, we have been experiencing a decline in exports of this product in recent months due to cyclical developments. Although there have been significant declines, particularly due to developments in the Iraqi market, we exported 165 million dollars worth of wheat flour in the first 10 months, a 100 percent hike compared to the same period last year,” he noted.

Pointing out that they are witnessing Syria filling a significant gap in this area, he added, “This data is also proof of our sector’s market diversification reflexes and resilience to external shocks.”
