Emre Uygun: Wrong decisions deepened the wounds in olive oil exports!

Press release…

Funds, quotas and bans led to a 28 percent decline in olive oil exports!

Türkiye has endured a challenging season for exports in the olive oil sector. The country exported 70,626 tonnes of golden liquid in the 2023/24 season, but only 50,713 tonnes in the 2024/25 season. Olive oil exports lost 28 percent in volume.

Emre Uygun, Chair of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association, commented on export data, stating that Türkiye had failed to correctly interpret global developments in the olive oil sector. He stated that the decline in global prices, coupled with the funding, bans and restrictions imposed on olive oil exports in 2022, 2023 and 2024, began with the restriction imposed by the Ministry of Trade on bulk and barreled olive oil exports on March 22, 2021.

“The funding and ban decisions have reduced Türkiye to the position of a global spotter. During this period, our country lost hundreds of millions of dollars in exports and suffered a loss of prestige. Today, we are still struggling with the consequences of these wrong decisions,” he said.

While our total olive oil exports decreased by 28 percent in volume, our exports to these countries soared by 17 percent, from 21,460 tonnes to 25,202 tonnes.”

46 percent of olive oil exported to the United States…

Türkiye exported golden liquid to 128 countries and customs-regions in the 2024/25 season, with the United States topping the list with 20,938 tonnes. The foreign exchange earnings from golden liquid exports to the United States reached 94.327 million dollars. The United States accounted for 46 percent of olive oil exports in volume.

Japan ranked second in olive oil exports with 22.511 million dollars, while Canada came in third with 14.257 million dollars in demand. Saudi Arabia, one of the Turkish olive oil sector’s traditional export markets, received 10.8 million dollar worth of golden liquid in the 2024/25 season…
