Ahmet Güldal: We expect 453 thousand tonnes of hazelnut harvest this year

Ahmet Güldal, General Manager of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), announced that, based on field observations, the hazelnut harvest is expected to be 453,000 tonnes this year.

In his assessment, Güldal stated that they are still at the beginning of the hazelnut harvest season and that, as in previous years, they announced the price before harvest.

Underlining that the TMO has been tasked with purchasing hazelnuts for the 13th time this year, Güldal said that hazelnuts are a very important product for Türkiye.

Pointing out that Türkiye alone accounts for 64 percent of global hazelnut production and exports approximately 80 percent of the product, he said, “We also generate significant income from exports; as of last year, it generated 2.5 billion dollars in foreign currency. In this sense, it must be said that hazelnuts are very valuable to our country and our producers.”

Reminding that they announced this year’s purchasing prices yesterday, he noted, “The price per kilogram of in-shell Giresun-type hazelnuts is 200 lira and the price per kilogram of Levant-type hazelnuts is 195 lira.”

“For each additional hazelnut yield, an additional fee of 4 lira will be paid for Giresun-type hazelnuts and 3.9 lira for Levant-type hazelnuts,” he added.

Highlighting that, depending on the exchange rate, the price of hazelnuts has reached levels of 5 dollars and above, along with the yield increases, he concluded, “Of course, when setting hazelnut prices, cost factors, producer expectations, domestic and international market developments are considered together. As you know, there was a significant frost this year, resulting in a loss in yield. I hope that prices for 2025 will be favourable.”
