Harvest period of “St. John’s Wort” plant has begun which was tried for the first time in Gümüşhane in 15 decares and known as the king of the herbs.
Within the scope of the “Development of Organic St. John Wort Growing Project” prepared by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and supported by the Eastern Black Sea Project Regional Development Administration (DOKAP), harvest of the yellow St. John’s Wort plant, which was cultivated last year in the Şiran district of Gümüşhane, has begun.
The St. John’s Wort plant, which is also called as “the king of the herbs” among the endemic plants across the world, was planted in organic gardens established in 15 decares with 6 producers in 5 villages in Şiran district last year. Flowering began in the organic certified St. John’s wort gardens in July and the first crop has been harvested.
Edip Birşen, the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, who participated in the harvest event, stated that the project was implemented for the first time in Gümüşhane and added, “We have realized another important project that will add value to Şiran in our region. We are working to increase production and bring new varieties in our province.”
Expressing that many studies have been initiated recently by the Ministry in the production of medicinal and aromatic plants, which is a growing market worldwide, Birşen said, “It has an important potential in this field with its virgin geography and rich flora. Consultancy of the project which is financed by DOKAP, has been carried out by Prof. Dr. Yüksel Kan. He is Head of the Department of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Faculty of Agriculture of Selçuk University. I hope we will get good results in cooperation with Dr. Yüksel Kan.”
