ZİYA ŞAHİN: PINE HONEY FINDS BUYER AROUND 20 LIRAS

The rising costs due to the coronavirus epidemic affect the producers as well as the air temperatures disrupting the pine honey production. This situation is expected to affect pine honey prices.

Turkey Beekeepers’ Association (TAB) Chairman Ziya Şahin said that a 27 kg tin of honey was processed for 400 liras last year and that a kilogram corresponded to 12-13 liras. However, Şahin said that the honey in the hands of the producer has found buyers around 20 liras at the moment.

Stating that this situation affects both consumers as well as producers, Şahin noted, “Beekeeping in Muğla province is an economic culture as well as an ancestor culture. There are 6 thousand beekeepers in Muğla. There is no such potential anywhere in the world, alike in a province. We owe this reality to pine honey production. Whereas now 6 thousand families are having a hard time in Muğla region this year.”

TAB Chairman Şahin, who demanded that the beekeepers’ loan debts be deferred this year, called for support from the government.

Pine honey good for health…

Underlining that pine honey is good for upper respiratory tract infection, Şahin added, “All our honey is valuable. We identified fingerprints of Turkish pine honey in 2017. We also realised the geographical registration of Muğla pine honey.”
