“WE ARE WORKING TO INCREASE HIGH VALUE-ADDED OLIVE EXPORTS WITH PACKAGING”

Press release…

Emphasis on the export of high value-added olives with packaging…

Stating that the support provided to the exporters should be increased and the export of packaged pomace oil should be also supported, Davut Er, Chairperson of Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association (EZZİB) said, “Our primary goal as the sector is to ensure the continuation of the export of olive and olive oil in a packaged and sustainable way.”

Er explained, “Turkey is the country that consumes the least per capita among the countries producing olive oil. Our total consumption is estimated around 140-150 thousand tonnes. Consumption per person is less than 2 kg. Olive oil consumption per capita varies between 10-15 kg in producing countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain. As a sector, our target is to increase the olive oil consumption in Turkey to 5 kg in the short term and in order to achieve this target, reducing the VAT rate from 8 pct to 1 pct in olive oil is important for increasing consumption.”

Target 1 billion dollars…

Noting that in the 2020/21 export season, table olive exports were 88.5 thousand tonnes and 150 million dollars and olive oil exports were 45 thousand tonnes and 135 million dollars, Er concluded his words as follows:

“In table olives, the countries to which we have exported the most in the last two seasons are Germany, Iraq, Romania, the USA and Bulgaria, while the USA, Spain, Japan, Iran and Saudi Arabia are listed in olive oil. In the coming years, it is aimed that our exports will reach 1 billion dollars at the first opportunity, with the further support of our producers and exporters and the realization of the expected production increase. As the Board of Directors, we continue to work with all our strength to export our olives and olive oil in boxes, packages and with high added value.”
