In dried figs of which Türkiye is the world leader in production and export, the 2021/22 season was left behind with 70 thousand 647 tonnes of exports.
The amount of foreign exchange the country obtained from dried fig exports reached to 258 million dollars.
Mehmet Ali Işık, Chair of Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters’ Association, who defines dried figs as one of the prestige products, draws attention to the fact that Türkiye carries out 60 percent of the world’s dried fig exports alone.
“The world’s best quality fig ‘yellow lop’ grows only in these lands. We have been working diligently for many years to raise the production quality and food safety of our dried figs, which is at the top of the list among world-class super foods. In the 2021/22 season, from October 6, 2021 to October 7, 2022, we delivered Turkish figs to 102 countries. The European continent took a 51 percent share of our 258 million dollar dried fig export in the 2021/22 season,” Işık said.
Işık also underlined that the European continent is the main trade partner with 134 million dollars, while exports to the Americas were 53 million dollars with an increase of 2.3 percent.
“We have exports of 30 million dollars to Asia, Oceania and Far East countries with an acceleration of 5.6 percent, 17 million dollars to the Middle East countries with an increase of 19 percent and 9.8 million dollars to the Turkic Republics and Slavic countries. In the ranking of the countries to which we export the most dried figs, the USA is our first market with 35 million dollars, France 34 million dollars, Germany 33 million dollars, Italy 14 million dollars with an increase of 29 percent, Canada 13 million dollars with an increase of 35 percent. Lastly we have an export of 10 million dollars to Japan with an increase of 17 percent,” Işık added.
Emphasizing that they expect high yield and quality in dried figs in the 2022/23 season, Işık concluded, “We aim to reach 75 thousand tonnes of dried figs and boost our exports to 300 million dollars.”
