Minister Yumaklı: Türkiye is a Self-Sufficient and Exporting Country in Seed Production
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı stated Türkiye’s food supply security and independence in seed production. In his speech at the International Seed Congress, he higlighted that Türkiye exports seeds to 117 countries and has significantly ramped up its seed production in the last 22 years.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı emphasied that Türkiye does not buy seeds from Israel and said, “Even if our connections are broken all over the world, we do not have any problems in terms of seed production that will affect the food supply security of our country.”
In his speech at the 8th International Seed Congress organised by the Turkish Seed Growers Association (TÜRKTOB) in Antalya, Yumaklı said that the importance of seed continues to increase.
Pointing out that they have carried out appropriate breeding programmes in conditions such as drought, salinity, low temperature and excessive rainfall due to climate change and in this context, 79 varieties have been registered so far and an increase of approximately 20 percent in production has been achieved, Yumaklı explained, “As a result of these efforts, 97 percent of every 100 kilograms of seed used in the country is produced domestically and we enhanced seed production from 145 thousand tonnes to 1.3 million tonnes in the last 22 years.”
