Press release…
Bedri Girit, Chair of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association, described the hike of the 50 cent cut in egg exports to 1.5 dollar as a hasty decision that will cause great damage to egg exports.

Emphasising that Ankara shared the 50 cent deduction on egg exports with them as ‘special for the month of Ramadan’ and that they were in the expectation that it would be lifted after the end of Ramadan, Girit said, “Before the 50 cent fund on eggs, we were exporting 160-200 TIRs of eggs per week. After the 50 cent deduction, we dropped to 20-30 TIRs and exports are impossible with a deduction that increases the average export price of eggs by 80 percent. If our exporters, who will only try to fulfil their commitments, risk exporting at a loss, 5 TIR exports can be made. When introducing funds, taxes and bans on exports, decisions should be made by looking at the benefits and drawbacks. Per capita egg consumption in Türkiye is 220 eggs per person per year, 18 eggs per month. Whether it is the right decision to eat 18 eggs expensive for a month or to interrupt exports. We leave this to the public’s discretion.”

Pointing out that there was no decrease in egg prices after the 50 cent fund for egg exports, Girit continued as follows; “Egg prices increase in the last week of Ramadan depending on demand. You can see this when you look at the previous years. After the Ramadan Feast, egg prices start to decline. We are also going through a period of increasing air temperatures. In winter, chickens give 1-2 eggs per week, but when the weather warms up, they start to give 4-5 eggs per week and egg prices start to decline as the product becomes abundant. Prices would have fallen even if the 1.5 dollar deduction was not imposed on egg exports. This fund will cause our exports to stop. If we had been patient for a week, both prices in the domestic market would have fallen and exports would have been on track.”
Spinach 60 TL, eggs 70 TL!
Girit, who informed that 30 egg parcels of 30 egg parcels from the egg producer are sold at 140 TL, added, “30 egg parcels exceed 2 kilograms. Spinach 60 TL, egg 70 TL. Egg parcels are sold for 220-230 TL in egg markets. The method here should be to inspect the markets that sell eggs with such high profits instead of preventing exports. When making such decisions, time should be given for the sector to take its position, the declaration has been opened, the money has arrived, and there are products to be loaded on the ship on Friday. Here, are you closing exports or penalising the producer? These need to be analysed correctly.”
