“Special support mechanisms should be implemented for the beekeepers”

Chemist Fırat Canbay, Head of Elazığ Beekeepers Association, stated that beekeepers have experienced great difficulties due to the effects of climate change and global warming in recent years and said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry should include beekeeping within the scope of support projects. Canbay emphasised that the ‘Support for Beekeeping in Rural Abundance’ model should be implemented.

BEEKEEPERS IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION, SUPPORT IS ESSENTIAL…

While the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry provides various opportunities to producers within the scope of the ‘Abundance in Rural, Support to Livestock Project’ initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in order to strengthen family businesses in rural areas and support the livestock sector, beekeepers expect a similar support.

Highlighting that beekeeping has been negatively affected by climate change and extreme weather events in recent years, Canbay said, “The sector is facing serious problems. Within this context, special support mechanisms should be established in order for beekeepers to survive in the face of increasing costs and changing climatic conditions.”

‘SUPPORT PROJECT FOR BEEKEEPING IN RURAL AREAS IS ALSO NECESSARY’

Canbay also reminded that the applications for the project, which came into force to support cattle breeding, have started and demanded that such supports to strengthen family businesses in rural areas should also be applied for beekeeping.

“Support projects, which are the greatest need of the field, should also be applied to the beekeeping sector. Support is necessary for beekeepers to modernise themselves, adapt technical conditions and increase their competitiveness. If the ‘Rural Abundance Beekeeping Support Project’ is implemented, it would be an important development for the sector,” Canbay added…
