ŞEMSİ BAYRAKTAR: WE SHOULD BUILD UP STOCKS OF STRATEGIC CROPS

Press release…

Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers (TZOB) Chairman Şemsi Bayraktar said that, in his written statement, staple crops, planted in dry lands across Turkey, like wheat, barley, canola and red lentil are on the verge of response due to the drought.

Bayraktar said, “Wheat, barley and lentils alone cover 56 percent of the total cultivated-planted areas.”

Planted in October and November…

Stating that these crops are planted in October-November, Bayraktar explained, “However rainfall during these months was much lower than last year. So we need to build up stocks of strategic crops, mainly wheat. On the other hand idle agricultural lands should be put into use as soon as possible. Many countries experience losses in efficiency because of the drought.”

“For example, 22 percent of winter wheat plantings in Russia had lack of growth. Countries experiencing losses in production like this could impose an export ban in 2021,” Bayraktar added.
