Şemsi Bayraktar: 88 percent of women farmers have no social security!

Şemsi Bayraktar, President of the Union of Turkish Agricultural Chambers (TZOB), made a statement on the occasion of 15 October International Women Farmers’ Day and emphasised the critical role of women in agriculture.

Bayraktar stated that women make important contributions in all areas of life, from agricultural production to child education, patient and elderly care.

“Women play a major role in agricultural production, nutrition and transferring knowledge to future generations,” Bayraktar said that women’s labour in agriculture is irreplaceable.

“The biggest way to keep our women in rural areas is to increase their participation in the social security system,” Bayraktar said, arguing that positive discrimination towards women farmers is mandatory. Bayraktar also emphasised that the biggest reform to be made in rural areas is to provide Agriculture BAĞ-KUR (Social Security Institute of Artisans, Craftsmen and Self-employed) premium support to women farmers. This step would strengthen women’s labour in rural areas and enable women to play a more active role in agricultural production…
