NO NEW COAL BY 2021!

A group of countries, including Sri Lanka, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Montenegro and the United Kingdom, announced today the “No New Coal Plant Agreement” aimed at halting the construction of new coal-fired power plants ahead of UN Climate Summit COP26.

This new initiative calls on countries to commit to immediately cease and stop permitting the construction of new coal-fired power plant projects.

Bengisu Özenç, Founding Director of the Sustainable Economics and Finance Research Association, said, “President Erdoğan, in his speech at the UN General Assembly, recently announced Turkey’s plan to ratify the Paris Agreement. In addition to this long-awaited announcement, two more messages were clear: Taking the 1.5 degree target as the main objective of the Agreement and carbon neutrality as a follow-up target. We now know that carbon neutrality by the middle of the century is only possible if some important milestones are achieved, such as ‘No new coal by 2021.’”

“As a country ready to play its part in climate change Turkey should also follow in the footsteps of this Convention and commit to the goal of ‘No new coal’ if it aims to be a sincere partner of the global climate regime,” Özenç added…
