Nihat Çelik: The only way to minimise the problems in the red meat sector is through ovine breeding

Nihat Çelik, Head of the Türkiye Sheep and Goat Breeders’ Central Union (TÜDKİYEB) said that the only way to minimise the problems in the red meat sector is through ovine breeding.

Pointing out that unions should take an active role in determining the prices of meat and dairy products, Çelik explained, “Unions should take an active role in marketing in order to bring meat and dairy products to the consumer’s table at a cheaper price. Since we are the ones who take care of the animals, we are the ones who raise them, we are the ones who feed them, we are the ones who milk them, why should industrialists determine the prices of raw milk and meat.”

“On the other hand, logistics services and transport costs should be reduced. Otherwise, this burden falls on the shoulders of the consumer. For example, putting lamb from Konya province on lorries, taking it to Balıkesir region, slaughtering it there, bringing the same lamb to Konya and selling it as Balıkesir lamb damages our sector both in terms of costs and misperception. Such wrong practices should be prevented,” he added…
