Marmaris (a district of Muğla province) Agricultural Development Cooperative (MARKO) was established with the contributions of Marmaris Municipality. Through the cooperative, both agricultural production will be promoted and products unique to Marmaris will be introduced to the world. An important step has been taken for agricultural development in Marmaris, whose economy is largely dependent on tourism.
With the support of Marmaris Municipality, Limited Liability Marmaris Agricultural Development Cooperative (MARKO) was established to increase the agricultural power of Marmaris. MARKO, which was established on 21 July to encourage and support agricultural production in 25 quaters of Marmaris district, held its first general assembly at Armutalan Cultural Center.
“We will be at the forefront in agriculture”
Mayor of Marmaris, Mehmet Oktay, stated that they have been working to reveal the agricultural characteristics of Marmaris since the first day they took office and that this cooperative has been formed as a result of these initiatives. Oktay said, “We want to remove Marmaris only from the perception of sea, sand and sun. We have very special products such as pine honey, peanut, sweetgum tree. Pine honey is registered as a geographical indication. Now it is the other ones. We will ensure that it is produced more and we will introduce it to the world and we will open new doors to our farmers. I hope all well for Marmaris.”
