The 2020/21 export season, which started very well, is closing bitterly in tangerine, the vitamin C store and the antidote of the pandemic, due to the frost at the beginning of December and the rains that follow.
In the production regions of İzmir, especially in Menderes and Seferihisar districts, which are important centres of tangerine production, first the frost and then the rains hit the crop. This situation has caused tangerine exporters fallen apart. While not covered by TARSİM Agricultural Insurance, it dealt a double blow to the exporter who purchased the product from the producer and already paid the price.
In the Aegean Region 2020 Citrus Harvest, which was carried out in cooperation with the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association and the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (ETAE), the tangerine harvest was predicted to be 154 thousand 245 tons, with an increase of 25 percent compared to the 2019 harvest.
The Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association Chairman Hayrettin Uçak stated that the tangerine harvest in 2020 was very good and that there was a great vitality from October 19, when the export season started, to mid-December, and that the tangerine exports were badly damaged due to the frost and rain experienced in December.
