Emre Uygun: For exports of 1 billion dollars, we expect the quota to be lifted as of 1 November!

Press release…

Emre Uygun, Chair of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association (EZZIB), said that the restriction imposed on the export of olive oil in bulk and barrels did not benefit neither the producer and exporter nor the consumer.

Emre Uygun

Pointing out that the measure imposed on the export of olive oil in bulk and barrels was taken in order to reduce prices in the domestic market, Uygun said, “The price of olive oil, which was 180 TL when the measure decision was taken, saw 350 TL levels, let alone falling. While our exports were 150 thousand tonnes in the 2022/23 season, they lost around 70 percent in the 7-month period in the 2023/24 season. Exporters were not the only ones who suffered due to the injunction. The producer suffered loss of income because he could not sell his products to exporters. Above all, Türkiye and Turkish olive oil exporters lost reputation in export markets.”

“We believe that the 50 thousand tonnes quota will be used by Turkish exporters by 1 November. In the 2024/25 season, in which we expect a yield of around 400 thousand tonnes, we wish a season in which there are no quotas and our exporters can export in world markets under free market conditions. As we stated on 24 May, export of agricultural products is the insurance of our producers. It is of vital importance for both our producers and our country that the insurance of our producers is not taken away. If the bans are left behind, we believe that we will reach the export target of 1 billion dollars for the first time in our history as the Turkish olive sector in the 2024/25 season,” Uygun explained.

What happened with bulk and barreled olive oil exports?

Bulk and barreled olive oil exports had faced bans and funds 4 times in the last 3 years. Thereupon, 20 institutions that determine the fate of the olive oil sector issued a statement to the public on 24 May 2024 titled “The ban on bulk and barreled olive oil exports should be lifted immediately”. In the declaration, it was underlined that the sector would enter the 2024/25 season with 200 thousand tonnes of stocks and with 50 thousand tonnes of Afrin region olive oil and an expected yield of over 400 thousand tonnes, it would face 650 thousand tonnes of olive oil in the 2024-25 season and the restriction on bulk and barreled olive oil exports was requested to be lifted…
