Produced in Türkiye’s northwestern province of Edirne during the Ottoman period and likened to a “spy story” after its formula was taken to France, the legendary color Rouge d’Adrinople has re-entered the region’s economic and cultural heritage thanks to ongoing efforts.

Developed by Edirne dye masters in the 15th century and first produced in France in the 1740s, Edirne red had long been forgotten.
Efforts initiated eight years ago, spearheaded by the Edirne Governorate, Edirne Municipality and Thrace University to revive this distinctive color of the city, have borne fruit.

“A significant asset of the region”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adnan Tülek, Director of the Thrace Agricultural Research Institute, told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that Edirne red is a significant asset of the province.
Noting that Edirne red, obtained from the root dye plant, has attracted attention with its colour and natural structure, Dr. Tülek said, “As interest in organic dyeing has increased, it has become more valuable. Significant efforts have been made to preserve this cultural value and restore it to its former value.”
