The Turkish seafood sector, which generates 2.3 billion dollars in foreign exchange for Türkiye annually, showcased Turkish fish at Future Fish Eurasia – the 12th International Seafood Export and Processing, Aquaculture and Fisheries Technologies Fair – in a bid to reach its target of 2.5 billion dollars.
Organised by Avrasya Fuarcılık (Eurasia Trade Fair) and hosted by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Future Fish Eurasia took place from 24 to 26 September in Hall C at Fuar Izmir (Fair Izmir).
As one of the country’s key international gatherings in the aquatic products sector, the fair showcases products and technologies across various areas of the industry, ranging from fish processing technologies and aquaculture equipment to cage systems, feed production technologies and fishing equipment. Norway and Libya are also represented at the fair with their national pavilions.
Dr. Hüseyin Akbaş, Deputy Director-General for Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, who participated in the event stated that the aquaculture sector has become a strategic sector in terms of food security, healthy nutrition, employment, exports, rural development and the protection of ecosystems. Noting that aquaculture has overtaken wild capture in terms of production, Dr. Akbaş said, “The aquaculture sector of the future must focus on producing in a more planned, efficient and sustainable manner before simply producing more.”
Emphasizing that Türkiye had reached the highest level in the history of the Republic with an aquaculture production of 1 million 37 thousand tonnes in 2025, of which approximately 627 thousand tonnes came from aquaculture, Akbaş highlighted the sector’s progress in terms of technological and innovative capacity.
Pointing out that the country ranks first amongst European Union countries in aquaculture, Dr. Akbaş added, “We are number one in the world for sea bream and sea bass production and second for trout production. We aim to rise to first place. We export to 100 countries. Our main objective is to make Türkiye a stronger hub in the global aquaculture sector by increasing the added value and brand value of our products. Our export target for 2026 is 2.5 billion dollars.”
