In Türkiye, rainfall for the water/agricultural year is monitored and calculated by the General Directorate of Meteorology for the period from 1 October of the current year to 30 September of the following year.

According to information compiled by an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent from data provided by the General Directorate of Meteorology, rainfall in the country during the October-January period of the water/agricultural year (1991-2020) averaged 253.2 millimetres. Rainfall was recorded at 181.4 millimetres during the four-month period of last year’s water/agricultural year and at an average of 250.9 millimetres during the four-month period of this year’s water/agricultural year.

Rainfall during the four-month period of the 2026 water/agricultural year in the country was around the long-term average and surged by 38 percent compared to last year.

‘This year, almost all of our regions received rainfall.’

Dr. Güven Özdemir, lecturer at Istanbul Aydın University and meteorological engineer, told an AA correspondent that agricultural activities are carried out on more than three-quarters of Türkiye’s land.

Dr. Özdemir emphasised that water, air and sun are the fundamental elements for agricultural production, adding, ‘However, water in particular has become much more strategic today. Türkiye is a country experiencing water stress.’

Pointing out that the long-term decrease in meteorological precipitation has brought about hydrological drought, but that the rainfall data for the last four months of the water year shows an overall spike, he added, “This year, almost all of our regions received rainfall. There has been a slight spike compared to previous years. However, there are regional differences.”
