Bedri Girit: If chicken feet export permission to China is granted, we could export 200 million dollars!

Press release…

The poultry sector, which has scientifically proven that there are no cases of bird flu in Türkiye, is waiting to be removed from China’s quarantine list. The poultry sector aims to export 75,000 tonnes of chicken feet to China annually, generating 200 million dollars in foreign currency for Türkiye.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı, during his visit to China last week, made efforts to restart Türkiye’s chicken feet exports to China.

Bedri Girit, Chair of the Aegean Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Association, stated that chicken feet exports from the country to China were halted in 2023 due to the bird flu outbreak and emphasized that despite the publication of a clear-of-bird report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, chicken feet exports to China have not resumed.

“Our country’s annual processed chicken feet export capacity varies from year to year, but it’s between 60,000 and 75,000 tonnes,” Girit said. “By exporting chicken feet to China, we can generate 200 million dollars in foreign currency annually for our country. Furthermore, one of our sector’s greatest expectations is to enable the export of other poultry products and processed poultry products to China, in addition to chicken feet.”

“Thanks to Yumaklı and Ministry officials!”

Girit thanked Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı and ministry officials for their efforts to open the poultry sector’s export route to China.

Explaining that chicken feet, which are not being used or contributed to the Turkish economy, are consumed in China, he highlighted, “However, we cannot export directly to China. Until September 2025, we exported a total of 32,000 tonnes of chicken feet to various countries, generating 19 million dollars in foreign currency for our country. Our average export price remained at 0.60/kg dollar. The countries we export chicken feet to export their surplus to China, excluding their own domestic consumption. Profit margins decrease significantly in indirect shipments and we experience a revenue loss of approximately 50-60 percent compared to when the product could go directly to the Chinese market.”

“The commencement of chicken feet exports to China would be a significant development for both our sector and our national economy. If we can export directly to China, the unit price will be at least three times higher,” he added…
