Ahmet Tiryakioğlu: Frost and drought will affect the harvest

Press release…

Ahmet Tiryakioğlu, Chairman of the Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Sector Board of Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TİM), assessed the expectations of both producers and industrialists in the wheat market as the new harvest season begins.

Emphasising that wheat leads the way with 7 million hectares of cultivation area within the grain cultivation areas that make up approximately 70 percent of Türkiye’s total agricultural land, Tiryakioğlu said, “The main reason for the high level of wheat imports in recent years is the need for raw materials for the production of finished products for export. We believe that correctly understanding this situation is very important in order to prevent misperceptions from forming in the public eye.”

“On the other hand, although a sustainable balance has been achieved in wheat production for many years at around 20 million tonnes, harvest expectations for the 2025 harvest season have weakened due to regional climate risks. In particular, factors such as drought and frost in the Mediterranean and Southeast Anatolia regions are reducing yields, while production declines are also expected in Central Anatolia due to insufficient rainfall. In durum wheat, in addition to a reduction in the area under cultivation, a product loss of nearly 10 percent is anticipated,” he noted.

Pointing out that however, Türkiye’s balance, established through its high self-sufficiency rate in durum wheat and exports of processed products, remains intact, he added, “In the face of the fragile structure of agricultural production, which is dependent on climatic conditions, the guiding nature of public policies towards production planning is becoming increasingly important. For this reason, the transition to a product-based clustering model and investments based on agriculture-industry integration will support food supply security in the coming period by increasing both crop stability and added value.”
