Aegean region citrus harvest 449 thousand tonnes, 34 percent fall!

The climate crisis has had a clear impact on citrus production in the Aegean Region. With temperatures reaching -17 degrees in April and 45-50 degrees in July, Türkiye is experiencing the climate crisis very harshly in the agricultural sector.

In April 2025, which has been described as a ‘black year’ for Turkish agriculture, the Aegean Region citrus harvest fell by 34 percent from 682,000 tonnes to 449,000 tonnes due to frost and cold weather in 36 provinces.

According to the ‘Aegean Region Citrus Crop Forecast Report’ prepared by the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association in collaboration with experts from the İzmir, Muğla and Aydın Provincial Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry, the citrus crop is expected to reach 155,405 tonnes in Muğla, 147,805 tonnes in Aydın, 133,779 tonnes in İzmir and 12,496 tonnes in Balıkesir province in 2025.

Tangerine becomes the new leader among citrus products…

Among citrus fruits, which are a natural source of vitamin C in the autumn and winter months, tangerine is the most widely produced citrus fruit in the Aegean Region, with an expected yield of 220,428 tonnes. The tangerine yield in the Aegean Region was 268,000 tonnes in 2024. A 16 percent decline in tangerine yield is expected.

The harvest of oranges fell by 34 percent and lemons by 50 percent…

Oranges, which topped the list in the Aegean Region in 2024 with a harvest of 286,000 tonnes, fell to 161,105 tonnes in 2025 with a 34 percent decline.

The decline in lemon harvest was even more severe. The Aegean Region, which produced 128,700 tonnes of lemons in 2024, is expecting a harvest of 64,700 tonnes in 2025. The Aegean Region’s lemon harvest has declined by 50 percent.

Grapefruit production in the Aegean Region, which was 6,831 tonnes in 2024, will drop by 66 percent to 4,136 tonnes in 2025…
