UNEP; 931 MILLION TONNES OF FOOD WASTED IN 2019!

According to the UN Environment Program (UNEP) Food Waste Index Report, approximately 931 million tons of food was wasted in 2019. Evaluating the report, which reveals that food waste is not only a problem for developed countries but also a global problem, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said, “Food waste is terrifying in terms of environment, economy and morals. We have to rethink our production and consumption ways, ”he said.

The Food Waste Index Report 2021, prepared in partnership with the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the UK Central environmental organization WRAP, has been announced.

Providing the most comprehensive food waste data collection, analysis and modeling to date and a methodology for measuring food waste to countries, 152 food waste data points were identified in 54 countries.

The Food Waste Index report helps countries track progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal to halve food waste by 2030.
