Global food prices fell 1.2 percent in October as lower cereal, dairy and meat prices outweighed increases in sugar and vegetable oils, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Friday.

The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks international prices of globally traded food commodities, averaged 133.9 points, up 5.9 percent year-on-year but 16.4 percent below its March 2022 peak.

Cereal prices dropped 4.5 percent, with wheat declining after four consecutive monthly increases amid subdued demand and improving production prospects, particularly in Argentina.

US harvest pressure and expectations of ample South American supplies weighed on maize prices. Rice prices, however, rose 1.6 percent amid harvest delays and adverse weather.

Sugar prices jumped 6.6 percent to their highest since December 2024, driven by rain-related harvest disruptions in Brazil and production concerns in India, Thailand and the EU.

Vegetable oil prices edged up 0.3 percent, as soybean and sunflower oil gains outweighed lower rapeseed oil prices.

Dairy prices fell 1.1 percent amid ample butter and cheese supplies and subdued buying interest, while meat prices declined 1.2 percent.

Cereal output forecast at 2nd-highest level on record…

In a separate report, FAO projected global cereal production at 2.999 billion tonnes in 2026, below the previous year’s record but still the second-highest total on record.

Rice output is forecast to fall 2.5 percent to 552 million tonnes, its first contraction in four seasons, reflecting weak producer margins and adverse weather linked to El Nino.

Global cereal consumption is expected to rise 0.2 percent to 2.971 billion tonnes in the 2026/27 season.

Cereal trade is forecast to shrink 3.3 percent to 507.7 million tonnes, driven mainly by lower wheat shipments amid supply and logistical constraints…
