Professor Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu, a faculty member at Istanbul Technical University and President of the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SÜT-D), highlighted the importance of plastics in our lives in her statement on World Environment Day on 5 June 2025. She emphasised that our plastics contain hidden petroleum and natural gas, and that the figures related to plastic waste are alarming, calling for collective action to combat plastic pollution.
“Plastic packaging, cutlery, balloons and various other single-use plastic items are prevalent in daily life, offering convenience through their durability, lightness and accessibility across various sectors like automotive, agriculture and construction,” she said.
“However, improper plastic waste management poses severe threats to human health, ecosystems, and biodiversity, emphasising the importance of treating waste plastic as a valuable resource for a circular economy. Due to its composition of petroleum and natural gas, waste plastic can be utilised as domestic raw materials, reducing the reliance on imports,” she explained.
Pointing out that as World Environment Day approaches, she added, “It is crucial to address the alarming environmental impacts associated with mismanaged plastic waste, promoting sustainable solutions and recognising waste plastic as a national asset that holds energy and economic potential.”
