Yaşabey Kalebaşı: We export water from Türkiye to four continents

Yaşabey Kalebaşı, Chair of the Association of Packaged Water Producers (SUDER), announces that they are a sectoral non-governmental organisation with 35 corporate members representing approximately 75 percent of packaged water production across the country.

“We employ nearly 94 thousand people”

Stating that the packaged water sector is of great importance for Turkish economy, Kalebaşı says, “It creates both a serious source of employment and export value. The logistics network created for the production of packaging in our country and the service to homes and workplaces is of great importance in terms of employment. Today, we provide employment opportunities for nearly 94 thousand people in total, including more than 14 thousand people directly. In addition, we export water to various countries such as Germany, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, TRNC, Malta, Azerbaijan, France, Austria, the USA, Japan, Libya and Israel.”

“We expect per capita water consumption to reach 130 litres”

Pointing out that in 2023, Turkish packaged water sector, which reached a market size of 31.1 billion TL, Kalebaşı explains, “We exported 391 thousand 876 tonnes and contributed 74.4 million dollars to our country’s economy. In 2024, we aim to ramp up our export volume to 395 thousand tonnes. In 2023, the per capita consumption of packaged water in our country was 127 litres, while we expect this figure to reach 130 litres by the end of 2024.”

“Our most important mission is to inform the society correctly and raise awareness”

“As the sector, we also endeavour to prevent our society from being misinformed about drinking water,” notes Kalebaşı and concluded, “Especially the methods and discourses used in the promotion of water purifiers, which have no scientific basis, cause our consumers to form wrong opinions. It is of utmost importance that consumers are correctly informed about the fact that water loses its beneficial properties for the body. From another point of view, the purification devices used in domestic consumption generate approximately 5 litres of wastewater to purify 1 litre of water and this figure increases even more depending on the replacement time of the filters. We aim to prevent water waste by creating awareness among consumers on this issue.”
