Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Gönüllü: “Geographical Indications Carry a Global Potential for Türkiye”

Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Muhammet Kasım Gönüllü stated that they have taken an important step in the journey of turning Türkiye’s geographical indications into global brands and said that Aydın Memecik Olive Oil was selected in the first layer of the project.
Emhasizing that Aegean province of Aydın is one of the shining stars of the country with its agriculture, tourism and ancient history, Gönüllü said, “We wholeheartedly believe in the abundance of our city. With our project, we aim to transform the richness of Aydın into value.”
Pointing out that Türkiye ranks second in the world after China in terms of geographical indications and that there are approximately 1,700 registered products and that the export of geographically marked products has reached 1.5 billion dollars, Gönüllü explained, “This market has a volume of 75 billion euros in Europe, so there is a great development potential for Türkiye in this field.”

“We are introducing the local richness of our 81 provinces to the world with our Anatolian ones project launched last year. In the second phase of the project, the geographical indication status of EU-registered products such as Malatya Apricot and Giresun Tombul Hazelnut will be further strengthened. Memecik and Edremit olive oils were included in the project in line with criteria such as value-added production and packaging design. We aim to enhance the competitiveness of these products in global markets.”
