While the world’s leading cotton producers expect a record decrease in yield due to the drought, drought has entered the agenda of the textile industry in Türkiye. It is stated that while there has been a contraction in apparel and textile orders since June, producer countries have started to keep hold of raw materials. Industry representatives draw attention to the need to establish a new ‘Turkish Cotton Standard’ in order to avoid potential problems in the medium and long term, even if there is no supply problem in the short term.
The effects of drought on agricultural production all over the world were finally reflected on cotton. While the leading countries of the world announced a record decrease in production; exporters turned into importers. The problem experienced in cotton production, which is one of the most important inputs in the textile sector, has also entered the agenda of the textile sector in Türkiye.
It is stated that since June, there has been a 10 percent contraction in orders on the garment side and a 20 percent contraction on the textile side. Stating that the producing countries have started to hold the raw materials in their hands, the sector representatives draw attention to the need to establish a new ‘Turkish Cotton Standard’ in order to avoid supply problems.
