Tobacco Experts Association announced the 2023 Tobacco and Tobacco Products Sector Report. In the report, it was noted that the obligation to use domestic tobacco in tobacco products, which started to be implemented with the decision taken in 2020, reflected positively on production and the amount of contracted tobacco production soared from 58 million kilograms to an estimated 74 million kilograms in the current 2023 crop year.
In the Report, it is stated that the obligation to use domestic tobacco, which is 17% for 2022, will be increased to 25% for 2024 and 30% for 2025, and that the Tobacco Experts Association supports the gradual increase of this ratio to 45% with the Presidential Decree.
In the report, it is estimated that approximately 35-45 million kilograms of leaf tobacco is produced unregistered annually to be consumed as shredded tobacco for rolling. In 20 years, the average weight of branch cigarettes decreased from 0.8632 grams to 0.5501 grams, and it was emphasised that while cigarette manufacturers sold 1 kilogram of tobacco for 58 packs of cigarettes in 2003, they sold the same amount of tobacco for 91 packs of cigarettes in 2023.
In the report, it was stated that Türkiye imported tobacco worth 609 million dollars last year, exported tobacco worth 265 million dollars and continued to be a net importer of tobacco and exported tobacco products worth 680 million dollars in addition to tobacco exports, totalling 945 million dollars.
In the Report of the Association, it was emphasised that the Tobacco and Alcohol Department, which regulates and supervises the sector in which 260 thousand retail tobacco products and alcoholic beverage sellers, thousands of manufacturers and more than 500 companies operate, should be given an autonomous structure under the Presidency of the Republic…
