SINAN KIZILTAN: TURKIYE’S 6-MONTH EXPORTS OF FISHERY PRODUCTS REACHED 829 MILLION DOLLARS

The first half of 2023 performance of the fishery sector which is one of the star sectors of exports after 2000 in particular, has become clear.

The aquaculture sector, which brought 760 million dollars of foreign currency to Türkiye in the January-June period of 2022, ramped up its exports by 9 percent to 829 million dollars in the first half of 2023.

According to the data of the Aegean Exporters’ Associations (EIB), when the export of aquaculture products is examined on the basis of quantity, the export of aquaculture products, which was 117 thousand tonnes in the January-June period of 2022, reached 125 thousand tonnes with a rise of 7 percent in the same period of 2023.

Sea bass at the top of exports…

In the aquaculture sector, sea bass remained the most exported fish species with an amount of 263 million dollars, while sea bream exports soared by 10 per cent from 195 million dollars to 215.7 million dollars.

The exports of Turkish salmon, which has become a star in recent years, increased by 34 per cent from 115.7 million to 154.7 million dollars.

Trout exports grew by 18 per cent from 49.5 million to 58.5 million dollars. While tuna exports increased from 28 million to 40 million dollars, tuna became the export growth record holder with an export increase of 43 per cent.

Türkiye’s rock sea bass exports were recorded as 3.5 million dollars, while 93 million dollars of foreign currency income was obtained from other aquaculture products.

Kızıltan; “Our production is progressing to 1 million tonnes and exports to 2 billion dollars”

Sinan Kızıltan, Chair of the Turkish Aquaculture and Animal Products Exporters’ Associations Sector Board, informed that the country’s aquaculture production reached 850 thousand tonnes in 2022 and said that 515 thousand tonnes, which constitutes 60 percent of this production, is obtained from aquaculture, Türkiye has made great investments in aquaculture and the sector aims to reach a production capacity of 1 million tonnes.

Stating that Türkiye has become the world’s largest producer of sea bream after the investments made in the aquaculture sector in the last 25 years, Kızıltan said, “We are the second in the world in exports in sea bream. While we are the biggest producer of sea bass in Europe, we are the second in the world in exports. We are among the top 5 countries in the world in terms of tuna production. In 2022, as the aquaculture sector, we exported 1 billion 650 million dollars, now we aim to bring foreign currency of 1.8 billion dollars in 2023 and 2 billion dollars in 2024 to the country.”
