Muğla, which holds an important position in the country in terms of aquaculture, mainly produces trout, sea bream, sea bass, umbra and yellowtail in its marine farms and inland water facilities.

Fish raised in facilities in the city centre and districts are collected from the production areas using net scoops and transported to the facilities for processing. The fish are cleaned at the facilities and prepared for sale as fillets or frozen.

The fish are exported to more than 80 countries in addition to the domestic market.

Approximately 35 percent of the country’s exports come from Muğla province…

Seyfettin Baydar, Director of Agriculture and Forestry in Muğla, told an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent that fish raised in the region are sent abroad fresh, chilled, frozen whole, cleaned, filleted and smoked.

Noting that Muğla has significant potential in agriculture and fishery product production, Baydar said, “Last year, 170,000 tonnes of fishery products were produced, of which 85,000 tonnes were exported, generating 745 million dollars in revenue. Our province accounts for approximately 35 percent of the country’s total exports of 2.2 billion dollars.”

Explaining that seafood exports from Muğla increased by 20 percent compared to the previous year, Baydar reported that most of the products were sent to European Union countries, Japan, Russia and the United States.

Highlighting that there are 342 seafood facilities in Muğla region, Baydar added, “Fishing activities in the province make a significant contribution to the country’s economy, providing employment for approximately 50,000 people, including fishermen, captains, workers at packaging facilities, filleters and workers at transport companies, in addition to fish production.”
