SECTORAL REPRESENTATIVES DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF FISH FARMING AND WELFARE…

The fish welfare report titled “Electrical Strike System Türkiye Review” prepared by Future for Fish, Türkiye’s first and only fish welfare programme run by the Association for the Protection of Farm Animals, was launched on 17 November at the Doubletree by Hilton Airport Hotel in Izmir.

Dr. Altuğ Atalay, Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and Professor Dr. Deniz Çoban, Academic Advisor of Future For Fish, made the opening speeches of the launch, which was attended by nearly 100 participants from Türkiye and abroad, including deans, representatives of Provincial Directorates of Agriculture, aquaculture breeders and fish welfare advocates.

Dr. Atalay said that Turkish culture is a culture that requires respect for animals raised for food.

Future For Fish Academic Advisor Professor Dr. Deniz Çoban said: “The aim of this launch meeting is to understand these problems in depth, to evaluate the current situation and to brainstorm together on solutions.”

“This event is a rare and important platform where different stakeholders have the opportunity to come together and talk about this issue,” said Deniz Kıraç Uncu, Future For Fish Programme Manager, “Each of our guests here has a special place in this social movement dedicated to fish welfare” and presented the report.

NUMEROUS SPEAKERS FROM HOME AND ABROAD

The prominent speeches at the launch, which was attended by many participants from abroad, are as follows:

Dr. Morris Villarroel, Vice Rector of Madrid Polytechnic University, emphasised the awareness of fisheries and fish farming in Europe and explained the projects carried out with the EU and the studies in Spain.

Professor Dr. Aslı Cadun Yünlü from Ege University, Faculty of Fisheries, Department of Processing Technology, stressed that the studies carried out with the University should be increased.

Thomas Cryans, Sales Manager of Ace Aquatec, stated that as a representative of a company producing aquaculture technology, they prioritise fish welfare.

Compassion in World Farming Fish Welfare Advocate Daniel Sanchez underlined that fish welfare is an ethical issue.

Bahadır Başaran, Technical Manager of Smile Fish, explained with scientific data why the use of Electrical Strike System (EÇS) extends the shelf life of fish.

Optimar Sales Manager Håvard Worren stated that Optimar designs equipment by prioritising sustainability and fish welfare.

Ertuğrul Gündoğdu, CEO of Octoaqua, pointed out that fish welfare methods boost sustainability in farm fisheries.

Future For Fish Academic Advisor Professor Dr. Deniz Çoban discussed nature-based, function-based and feeling-based factors when defining fish welfare.
