Branding and geographical indication has been increasing in olive oil across Turkey in recent years.
The number of brands that received approval from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TPMK) reached 688 as of March 23, 2021 and the number of geographically marked olive oils reached 16.
Reşit Özer, Chair of Milas (a district of Muğla province) Chamber of Commerce, who visited Hakan Kızıltepe, Chief of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Institute (TPMK) Geographical Indications Office in Ankara, said that branding has surged in the wake of Milas olive oil got geographical indication from EU and TPMK.
Stating that Milas olive oil is the first and only Turkish olive oil to obtain a geographical indication from the EU, Reşit Özer noted that geographical indication also increased the branding. Pointing out that the number of olive oil brands in Milas region has reached 69 in a short time, Özer added, “The number of olive oil brands with geographical indication in Milas increased to 19.”
Hakan Kızıltepe also stated that they closely followed the process of obtaining geographical indication for Milas oil olive from the EU with the application made by Milas Chamber of Commerce to the EU and expressed his hope that the EU geographical indication approval will come soon.
