October, 2026…
The Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum, held as part of the 2026 World Food Forum under the theme ‘Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow’, opened with investment proposals totalling 20.16 billion dollars. At a time when 645 million people are facing hunger, Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), called for the benefits of science and innovation to reach those who need them most, stating, “The steps we take today will determine whether tomorrow’s agricultural and food systems can truly feed a growing and changing world.”

The Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum opened with investment proposals totalling 20.16 billion dollars…
At the FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum 2026, held as part of the World Food Forum, 38 countries and five regional initiatives presented a record 20.16 billion dollars in proposed agricultural and food investments.
Targeting some of the world’s most vulnerable communities, the proposed investments cover staple crops, livestock, fisheries and high-value commodities such as coffee and cocoa. The aim is to strengthen value chains, enhance productivity and improve livelihoods in areas where needs are greatest and the potential for impact is highest.

Noting that in many countries, promising opportunities struggle to attract funding because they lack the information and reliable plans that investors require, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said, “Building resilience requires sustainable investment in agriculture and food systems, yet many opportunities go untapped due to high risks. The Hand-in-Hand Initiative is transforming how these investments are designed, how their risks are mitigated and how they are financed. It enables each key actor to contribute by doing what they do best.”
From investment cases to financing…
The Hand-in-Hand Initiative addresses a fundamental challenge in agriculture and food investments; the gap between need and investable opportunities. The FAO uses advanced geographic information systems, economic modelling and technical analysis to identify priority regions and value chains where investments can have the greatest impact. Based on data covering climate risks, soil health, infrastructure, market access, poverty and socio-economic conditions, the analysis helps countries translate their national priorities into viable investment opportunities.
Since 2022, the initiative has helped countries translate their national priorities into 387 investment cases totalling 47.26 billion dollars, with the potential to benefit over 338 million people. Of this amount, 7.88 billion dollars in funding has been committed or is under discussion. Participation has expanded to 87 countries.
This year’s Investment Forum was the largest to date, with proposed investments totalling 20.16 billion dollars and 117.8 million potential beneficiaries. In 2025, governments submitted investment plans worth 17.3 billion dollars…
