Preparing geographical indication for Salihli olive oil…

Press release…

The award-winning olive oils produced from Salihli’s (district of Manisa province) quality olives have led the relevant institutions in the district to conduct research on geographical indication registration. The Chairpersons of Salihli Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Salihli Commodity Exchange and Salihli Chamber of Agriculture came together with olive oil producers and exchanged ideas about the way to be followed.

Salihli Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (Salihli TSO) successive geographical indication registrations of the district’s characteristic products brought a new product to the forefront. Salihli Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairperson İbrahim Yüksel, Salihli Commodity Exchange Chairperson Yetiş Aksoy, Salihli Chamber of Agriculture Chairperson Cem Yalvaç, Salihli Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice Chair Günay Topkaya came together with olive oil producers and exchanged views on the steps to be taken to obtain a geographical indication for olive oil.

Hikmet Bacak from Kroisos Olive (Zeytincilik), Semih Yetim from Pulathaneliler Food (Gıda), Şengül Akansel from Akansel Olive (Zeytincilik), Rasim Paşa and Sinan Akça from Özbal Olive (Zeytincilik) attended the meeting at Salihli TSO and reached a consensus on the registration of Salihli Olive Oil, which has made a name for itself with its quality.

İbrahim Yüksel, Chair of the Board of Directors of Salihli TSO, informed that the Chamber has obtained geographical indication registrations for 4 products, including Kula Chickpeas and Gökeyüp Pottery, the first of which was Salihli Cherry and Salihli Wood Meatballs in 2007.

Explaining that they expect the registration application for Sultani Grape Molasses to be finalised soon, Yüksel underlined that it is time to take action on olives, which have become the second most common product after grapes.

Stating that Salihli olives have become a sought-after product with their superior quality, heads of chambers and olive oil producers argued that the olives produced by conscious producers in large parcels in Salihli region are far superior to their counterparts in terms of quality; while the average age of olive trees in Akhisar district is 38 years, the average age in Salihli region is 9 years and this reflects positively on quality. It was also stated that the irrigation rate is higher in Salihli olive compared to Akhisar.

At the end of the meeting, a joint decision was taken to take the necessary steps as soon as possible to apply for a geographical indication registration for Salihli Olive Oil…
