Mehmet Akın Doğan: Permitting lemon exports is not in the producers’ interest!

Mehmet Akın Doğan, Head of the Adana Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, voiced farmers’ expectations and concerns regarding the requirement for permits for lemon exports.

Noting that citrus fruits, an integral part of Çukurova region’s agricultural identity, are exported to many countries, particularly European countries and the Middle East, Doğan said, “In Adana province, which accounts for approximately 40 per cent of Türkiye’s citrus production, the first citrus harvest begins with lemons. The commission responsible for determining the citrus harvest and export dates has not yet announced the dates, but as there is no product in storage, Mayer lemons entered the domestic market in the first week of August.”

‘It will weaken our producers’

Emphasising that the severe frost on 22-25 February caused significant yield losses for farmers, Doğan added, “Producers did not get the return they expected for onions, potatoes, watermelons, tomatoes, peppers and many other products. No support was provided during this process. Restricting lemon production will further weaken our producers’ position. It is against the the producers’ interest.”
