Işınsu Kestelli: Rainfall negatively impacted the 2025/26 season cotton harvest in the Aegean Region

Işınsu Kestelli, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Izmir Commodity Exchange, announced that due to adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall, the 2025/26 season cotton harvest in the Aegean Region is expected to be approximately 10-15 percent below the expected value.

“As is known, the determination of cotton-planted areas in the Aegean Region and crop yield estimation studies are coordinated by the İzmir Commodity Exchange; in cooperation with the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Aegean Exporters’ Associations, Manisa Commodity Exchange, Aydın Commodity Exchange, Söke Commodity Exchange and Tariş Cotton and Oilseeds Agricultural Sales Cooperatives Union, within the framework of a protocol signed with the Department of Soil Science at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ege University,” she said.

Pointing out that as a result of these studies, the 2025/26 Aegean Region Cotton Yield estimate was announced as 160,000 tonnes at a meeting held on 8 October 2025 with the Izmir Commodity Exchange and partner institutions, she added, “Following the announcement of the yield forecast, field studies were conducted again throughout the Aegean Region in November with expert teams to identify the significant disruption to harvesting work caused by heavy rainfall in the region and the negative effects of extreme weather events.”
