Emre Uygun: Japan’s olive oil imports dropped 60 percent

Press release…

Stating that the Japanese people consume healthy and quality food, Emre Uygun, Chair of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters Association, said, “The Japanese people have recently braked in consumption due to the rise in inflation figures in Japan in recent years and the depreciation of the Japanese yen against the dollar, and that olive oil imports fell 60 percent in 2024.”

“Japan is a strong economy and they know how to take precautions very well. They believe that they will recover their shaken economy in a short time after the pandemic,” said Emre Uygun and continued as follows; “Of course, as in the whole world, Japan needs to follow the dynamics of the Trump era. The negative situation for Türkiye is that even in a market like Japan, where we experience the least price pressure, we are unfortunately unable to compete with rival countries Spain and Tunisia due to our increasing costs. It seems that our exports will continue to bleed and our exporters and producers will continue to lose power.”

Pointing out that Turkish exporters of olive oil and other agricultural/food products have lost their price advantage against rival countries in their sectors, Uygun explained, “Since we believe that the contraction in the Japanese market will not be long-lasting, 12 olive and olive oil companies participated in the Foodex Fair and promoted Turkish olive and olive oil. We organised an olive oil seminar with a Japanese Sommelier. In the 2024/25 season, we ranked second in the world with 475 thousand tonnes of olive oil yield. One of the priority markets where we can market this yield in a value-added way will be Japan.”

“The TURQUALITY Project to be carried out for Japan will also make a great contribution to the awareness of Turkish food products in the Japanese market,” Uygun added…
