“Domestic seeds are vital for Türkiye’s strategic independence”

October, 2026…

Murat Yalçıntaş, General Manager of OYAK, stated that the capability to develop domestic seeds is of great importance for Türkiye’s food supply security and strategic independence.

ANTALYA…

Uninterrupted and secure access to food is a fundamental element of a nation’s national security. Agriculture, as the source of the food supply, stands as one of the most critical strategic sectors.

Seeds, which constitute the initial stage of agricultural production, serve as the starting point for the entire process. Countries that produce their own seeds are able to sustain their food supply under their own conditions, while limiting the impact of external factors.

In this respect, domestic seeds emerge as an integral part of both food security and national security.

Within this context, HEKTAŞ, a key industry player that maintains a strong position in the field of plant protection, has placed seed production and R&D investments at the core of its future growth strategy.

Operating within an area of approximately 36,000 square metres at the Akdeniz University Technopark, HEKTAŞ Seeds conducts research in plant breeding, biotechnology and advanced seed technologies.

The company, which operates under the umbrella of OYAK, is also engaged in breeding programs aimed at developing high-yield seed varieties tailored to the climatic and agricultural production conditions of diverse geographical regions.

As part of this effort, seeds developed in Türkiye undergo trials in various countries and the results are used to create varieties specifically suited to regional needs. As HEKTAŞ continues its seed trials in Central Asia and the Middle East for a second season, initial commercial activities have also commenced in the target markets.

“Seed is an indispensable prerequisite for a country’s food security.”

OYAK General Manager Yalçıntaş, who inspected the HEKTAŞ Seed Facility in Antalya, stated to an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that the facility, where seed breeding activities are conducted, represents a convergence of HEKTAŞ’s scientific expertise, robust R&D infrastructure and agricultural vision.

Noting that seed is the starting point of agricultural production, Yalçıntaş emphasized that high-quality seed lies at the foundation of productive, sustainable agriculture and food security.

Yalçıntaş also underlined that the capability to develop domestic seeds is of great importance for Türkiye’s food supply security and strategic independence…
