CHESTNUT HONEY RECEIVES GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION AS İSTANBUL’S FIRST FOOD PRODUCT!

The formation, which was established by the chestnut honey producers in Şile district of İstanbul, under the name Şile Agricultural Development Cooperative, applied to the Turkish Patent Institute and registered chestnut honey as the first geographically indicated food product in İstanbul province.

Şile Agricultural Cooperative Chairperson Ahmet Can said, “I am a beekeeper in Şile. I have been dealing with beekeeping for approximately 12, 13 years. Şile region is an area covered with natural forests as you can see. 80 percent is forest, the rest is settlements and other areas. Almost half of this 80 percent forest area is chestnut forests. We are also producing chestnut honey here. As beekeepers here, about 300 families are engaged in beekeeping in Şile. Here, of course, our locomotive product is our chestnut honey. Chestnut honey is a product that has been produced in this region for years and is an award-winning product in the world, in Italy. It is currently on display in the category of products that should be kept in Noah’s Warehouse.”

ŞİLE CHESTNUT HONEY ISTANBUL’S FIRST GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATED FOOD PRODUCT…

Ahmet Can explained, “There are around 60 products on display in our country. Two products from Şile, Şile chestnut honey and Şile chestnut honey vinegar, are exhibited there. With the accumulation of years, we wanted to make it registered. We applied for the geographical indication registration. We made this application at the end of 2020 and our registration was made in this 9th month of 2021.”
