At a press conference held at the İzQ Entrepreneurship Centre, the results of the work of the crop estimate committee, consisting of representatives from the Izmir Commodity Exchange (ITB), Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Aegean Exporters’ Associations, Söke, Aydın and Manisa commodity exchanges, Tariş Cotton Union and Ege University Faculty of Agriculture, were shared regarding the 2025-2026 cotton season.

Bülent Uçak, Vice Chairman of the ITB Board of Directors, stated that cotton is a strategic product, the bread and butter of thousands of families and the backbone of industry, textiles and exports.

Pointing out that cotton cultivation has decreased due to rising costs and water scarcity, Uçak said, “The cotton harvest estimates, which have been carried out for many years under the coordination of our Commodity Exchange, continue to yield successful results. According to the results of the study, it is estimated that cotton cultivation areas in our region have decreased by 18.5 per cent compared to the previous season, falling to 94,000 hectares. The average lint yield is expected to boost by 3.9 per cent compared to last year, reaching 437 kilograms per decare. We forecast that lint production will be 410,000 tonnes. It is estimated that the ginning efficiency rate will be 39 per cent in the new season and that seed cotton (lint) production will be 160,000 tonnes with this efficiency rate. These results have been calculated based on the results of field and laboratory studies conducted over the last three months.”

Uçak added that it should be borne in mind that climate conditions could lead to a loss of quality and yield in the harvest…
