Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Yumaklı: We rank fourth globally and second in Europe for protected cultivation
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı, highlighting the importance of protected cultivation for agriculture, said, “Türkiye ranks fourth globally and second in Europe in this field. We are continuing to support this rapidly developing sector.”
“Food supply security is a matter of national security”
Minister Yumaklı, who was inspecting the geothermal greenhouse at the Akyazı site in Erzincan province, said in a speech delivered there: “Food supply security is a matter of national security. Particularly in the current climate, all countries are undertaking very serious efforts to ensure food supply security.”
Emphasising the importance of protected cultivation for agriculture, Yumaklı said, ‘Türkiye ranks fourth globally and second in Europe in this field. We continue to support this rapidly developing sector.’
Pointing out that the use of technology and accumulated knowledge have contributed to the sector’s development, he stated, “The use of technology, accumulated knowledge and the sector’s continued production in line with the Ministry’s policies have brought us this success. God willing, we will climb even higher at a rapid pace.”
Highlighting that the area under cover in greenhouses has soared by 44 percent over the last 24 years, he explained, “We have 789,000 decares of production area under cover in the country. Vegetables are grown on 92 percent of these areas, fruit on 7 percent and ornamental plants on 1 percent.”
Drawing particular attention to ornamental plants, Yumaklı indicated that this sector has developed rapidly in recent times and continues to do so.
Yumaklı, who reported that 8.3 million tonnes of vegetables and 1 million tonnes of fruit are produced in greenhouses annually, added, “I would like to underline that production here continues to increase, particularly because it offers far greater advantages than soil-based production. The greenhouse we are in is 30 decares in size. However, the yield from this area is equivalent to that of 90 decares of soil-based cultivation. I would like to give this example to illustrate the difference.”
