In Nazilli district of Aydın province, “fig chips,” prepared by thinly slicing fresh figs and drying them in the shade, both add value to producers and sweeten tables both domestically and internationally. Nuri Duran, who started his business as a child by selling three sacks of dried figs given to him by his father in front of mosques, turned to fig chip production with the business he established 10 years ago. Providing employment to more than 20 women, Duran processes 150-200 tonnes of fresh figs during the season and aims to expand into Europe.

With the harvest season for “Aydın Figs,” one of Türkiye’s geographically registered products with the European Union (EU), the production of fig chips, a flavour spreading throughout the world, has also begun.
SWEETENING TABLES DOMESTICALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY…

Approximately 40,000 hectares of land in Aydın province are used for fig production, yielding an average of 200,000 tonnes of product per season. Approximately 70,000 tonnes of figs are exported after being dried, while some are sold fresh. A portion is also dried in thin slices to create “fig chips,” which are enjoyed both domestically and internationally.
SELLING 5-6 TIMES THE PRICE OF FRESH FIGS…
Many producers sell their “fig chips” through social media, while some export directly abroad. This product fetches approximately 2-2.5 times the price of dried figs and 5-6 times the price of fresh figs. These practices, aimed at increasing product value and providing producers with higher income, create both employment and added value…
