In a statement to the Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent, Sağlık said that milk has held a very important place in nutrition and health for centuries and that with its protein, calcium, and many valuable nutrients, it is an important part of a healthy diet.
Sağlık emphasized that according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), 21,379,088 tonnes of raw milk were produced in the country last year and that cow’s milk accounted for 94.5 percent of the production with 20,202,934 tonnes, followed by sheep’s milk with 798,700 tonnes, goat’s milk with 338,530 tonnes and buffalo milk with 38,924 tonnes.
Underlining that approximately 50-60 percent of the total milk produced is processed by the industrial sector and that out of the 11,233,000 tonnes of cow’s milk collected by this sector, 1,640,000 tonnes are used in drinking milk production, 1.4 million tonnes in yogurt, 1,050,000 tonnes in buttermilk and kefir, approximately 838,000 tonnes in cow cheese, 123,000 tonnes in milk powder production and 108,000 tonnes in butter production.
Noting that Türkiye is among the leading countries across the world in raw milk production, she added, “With over 20 million tonnes of milk production in the last 9 years, it is a source of pride for all of us that our country ranks 3rd in Europe after Germany and France and among the top 10 in the world.”
