Ülkü Karakuş: We should encourage the cultivation of oilseeds not sufficiently produced in the country

Feed industry calls for incentives for oilseed cultivation…

Ülkü Karakuş, Chair of the Turkish Feed Industry Association (TÜRKİYEM-BİR), has called for incentives to encourage the cultivation of oilseeds, which are not produced in sufficient quantities in Türkiye.

Ankara…

Karakuş, in an assessment to an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent on how the sector performed in 2025, said that the feed industry acts as a bridge between plant and animal production.

Karakuş reported that 1.4 billion tonnes of feed were produced worldwide, with China being the largest producer at 322 million tonnes and EU countries producing 147 million tonnes of compound feed. “Türkiye ranks first among EU countries and seventh worldwide with a compound feed production of 29.3 million tonnes.”

Drawing attention to the fact that drought also affects feed production, Karakuş recalled that grain production in 2025 will be negatively affected by this development, with yields falling compared to 2024.

Explaining that insufficient rainfall and the decrease in water resources have increased production costs, affected animal production and increased dependence on foreign sources for feed raw materials, Karakuş noted, “When there is drought, there are also problems in the supply of plant-based raw materials such as cereals and oilseeds. Consequently, this situation leads to an increase in imports and upward movement in prices. Rising prices also cause an increase in feed and animal food costs.”

Pointing out that the importance of promoting modern irrigation methods such as drip and pressurised irrigation, he added, ‘It is important that water-intensive crops are not grown in regions with water scarcity.”
