Nihat Çelik: The spike in the number of ovines is promising for the sector

Nihat Çelik, Chair of the Turkish Sheep and Goat Breeders’ Association (TÜDKİYEB), stated that the spike in the number of small ruminants is promising for the sector, adding, “The recorded increase in the number of small ruminants will have a positive impact on red meat production and consumption.”

TÜDKİYEB Chair Nihat Çelik spoke to an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent about the rise in small ruminant numbers and the sector’s expectations for the coming period.

Emphasising that the 6 percent rise in the number of ovines in the first half of the year compared to the end of last year is an important development for the sector, Çelik said that the increase should continue in the coming years.

“The number of small ruminants had reached 58 million 206 thousand, with sheep numbers standing at 47 million 15 thousand and goat numbers at 11 million 191 thousand as of the end of June,” he added…
