Wire-curtain method recommended for raisin quality improvement!

Mustafa Sacit İnan, an agricultural engineer at the Manisa Viticulture Research Institute, stated that the wire-curtain (wire-display) method improves the quality of raisins, but producers are discouraged from using it due to its high cost.

The Sultana seedless grape harvest has begun in Türkiye’s leading agrifood province of Manisa and its surrounding districts. Mustafa Sacit İnan, a researcher at the Manisa Viticulture Research Institute, stated that the wire-curtain method improves the quality of raisins, but producers are discouraged from using it due to its high cost.

İnan emphasized that Manisa is one of the world’s most important centres for Sultana seedless grapes, emphasizing that accurate harvest timing is critical for yield.

“Costly, but offers many advantages”

Indicating that the system requires investment, he said, “This system requires investment. The primary reason our producers don’t prefer it is the economic cost. Beyond that, there’s a need for a fixed location and a suitable ground. Therefore, the primary reason lies in economic reasons. This type of display actually has advantages for producers. We’ve all known that grapes get caught in the rain at exhibitions in recent years. These wire displays can be covered, which has an advantage. Closing the displays when it rains prevents rain from damaging the grapes.”

“However, due to the high cost, our producers don’t prefer it very much. There’s at least a one-point difference between laying the same grapes on wire and laying them on canvas. This type of display score can reach as high as 1.5 points. In other words, our producers can obtain the same grapes as size 10 instead of size 9 or as size 9 or 9.5 instead of size 8. This advantage opens the way for us to export high-quality products, making it easier,” he added…
