The Konya Plain has become the most important sunflower production region after Thrace. Experts stated that since sunflowers are grown primarily in irrigated areas in the plain, they do not anticipate a yield loss as significant as that of grain. They stated that the sunflowers produced are of very high quality, and they expect this to be reflected positively in prices with the upcoming harvest.

Known as Türkiye’s granary, Konya province contributes significantly to the national economy, producing approximately 6 million tonnes of grain during the harvest season. With sunflower cultivation becoming increasingly popular with farmers every year, the Konya Plain has begun to account for 200,000 tonnes of Türkiye’s sunflower oil production.
“We have no problems that would cause our citizens any hesitation.”
Burak Kırkgöz, Chair of the Konya Branch of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers (ZMO), emphasized that despite the dry production season, there were no major problems arising from the cultivation of sunflowers using irrigated agriculture.

“Total oil production in Türkiye is around 1.85 million tonnes. Approximately 200,000 tonnes of this is produced in the Konya region. This is a very significant production volume. The Konya region offers significant potential for sunflower oil production, both in oil mills and in its cultivation. We do not currently anticipate any problems with the oil produced in the Konya region. Because the sunflowers grown in the Konya region are primarily grown in irrigated areas, we do not anticipate a yield loss as significant as that of grain,” he said.
“We hope we won’t experience any problems, but we can say this: the oil content of the sunflowers produced is very high-quality. There is no need for our citizens to have any hesitation or concern at this time. Hopefully, ‘With the sunflower harvest in the coming periods, this will have a positive impact on oil prices,'” he added…
